Jon M. Chu, 2018 NAFC Humanitarian Action Through the Film Medium Award Winner

The National Association of Film Critics is proud to present its inaugural Humanitarian Action Through the Film Medium Award to Jon M. Chu for his role as director of the groundbreaking film Crazy Rich Asians. People of Asian descent have largely been marginalized in American films and American media in general. Asian leads are a rarity in mainstream Hollywood films and many Asian performers have had lengthy careers with numerous outstanding performances but have rarely received the nominations, awards, and opportunities to headline projects that many of their peers have received. Jon M. Chu, in making Crazy Rich Asians, took…

Peter Jackson, 2018 NAFC Special Achievement Award Winner

The First World War has never received the attention it is due, with focus often being placed on the wars that followed it, despite being the most devastating war in history at the time it occurred. Peter Jackson’s documentary, a passion project to bring greater awareness to this part of our collective history at the centennial of the war’s end, is an outstanding documentary in its own right but it is Jackson’s ability to sift through hundreds of hours of material created during the last century and rework it and edit it to give the appearance of footage that was…

Robert Redford, 2018 NAFC Lifetime Achievement Award Winner

When discussing who the ideal recipient of the inaugural National Association of Film Critics Lifetime Achievement Award would be, the Board of Directors saw one clear choice that stood above all others. Robert Redford’s long career has been one of the most outstanding in film history. During a decades long acting career including such classics as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, All the President’s Men, and Out of Africa, and continuing through this year’s The Old Man and the Gun, Redford has delighted audiences and been the embodiment of the American movie star. Alongside his acting roles,…

Response to Academy Changes

The National Association of Film Critics would like to come forth in opposition to the changes the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has recently announced. Firstly, and most importantly, the decision to present certain awards during commercial breaks is abhorrent. Each category is equally deserving of time and attention from the Academy as each category honors those who have enriched the cinematic experience. While highlights of these segments will be shown later, this does not afford the awardees the level of respect given to other awardees such as, presumably, the best actor and best actress despite these awardees…
